Giddings Boardinghouse
The famous Giddings Poltergeist case took place here. Mrs. William Giddings and her 14-year-old servant, Mary Spiegel, were baking pies on August 8, 1974, when the trouble started. A cellar trap door in the kitchen started to open by itself, then dishes and silverware began to fly around the room. Chairs floated to the ceiling, and food hovered in midair. The frightened women summoned two neighbors, who also witnessed the phenomena. Suddenly, logs and water pails began to fly over the astonished neighbor's fence. People from blocks around rushed to Giddings Boarding House to see what was going on. News reporters soon discovered that the activity only occurred when the young servant girl was present. Mrs. Giddings fired the girl, who was severely beaten by her father. The next day, Mary attempted suicide by jumping in the river, but a bystander jumped in to save her. A prominent Chicago physician took on her case. During his investigation, he discovered that Mary suffered from sleep walking and was "neurotic." Every time the doctor took Mary back to the boarding house, objects started to levitate through the air.
(Milwaukee is in southeastern Wisconsin, at the junction of I-94 and I-43. The old boarding house is a private residence in south Milwaukee, on the corner of Allis Street and Whitcomb Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53207.)
