In the mid-1890s a fisherman went out on a pier to pull up his set line and discovered he had caught something awfully large. He hauled the line back with great effort, finally pulling up something with a large head. It had wide-open eyes and huge jaws. More than that he didn't wait to see. He believed that his escape had been narrow, given the creature's mood. Swimmers avoided that part of the lake for the rest of the season.
